I have to say I visited this gaff with some trepidation, (well, a little)...only on account of the fact that when I lived in Leicester, the Swan and Rushes was a rough and ready pub lacking in any atmosphere and beer. It was frequented by an element of the 'unsavoury'. I'm sure there were one or two 'salt of the earth' types but it wasn't somewhere on the list of desirable pubs /venues to visit.
Now, however it's changed, good range of well kept ales, unpretentious and courteous bar staff and a friendly atmosphere. Also has a full size Bar Billiards table, when myself and my mate arrived on a Saturday afternoon just before the Tigers were due to play it was packed with Tigers fans, but quickly emptied one kick off loomed.
Good pub...It's safe to visit now the most boring man in the universe appears to have been barred again. Let's hope it's for good this time. Pizzas will soon be on the menu too.

    *** BEER FEST UPDATE ***
I've been advised that the Swan will be holding a Beer Festival coinciding with the Leicester Castle Park Festival (and Peterborough Beer Fest) which is due to commence on Thursday 26th August and running through to Sunday 29th.
The festival will feature a Hog Roast on Friday and Saturday (first time for a city centre pub in leicester???) and promises an assortment of new and unusual beers plus old favourites.
Couldn't find any info on this in the Leicester Drinker, but the Swan website has date / time info plus a festival beer list...

    @ All_Hail_The_Ale
Not quite right on presumption of who I am... but oh well... It's still seems like a lovely boozer to me! I had a Sunday roast there two weeks ago, lovely grub, reasonable price and the Old Hooky tasted bloomin lovely!
Cheer up All_Hail_the_Ale!The guest Burton Bridge Damson Porter was turning, but the Everards Sleighbell was on good form.

Interesting to note the most recent comment below...
Personally, I'm always a bit dubious when a pub re-opens after being very bad and suddenly a new BITE user appears with a name like 'Alefanatic' and posts a glowing review of the place on the day they sign up without posting comments on ANY other pubs whatsoever.
Presumably if they really were fanatical about the ale they'd have visited (and posted on) a few other hostelries, both within Leicester and beyond.
Sadly this is not the first time we've seen this damage limitation attempt on behalf of Everards houses - if you're going to do it at least have the decency to try and make the posting look authentic, don't insult the intellect of the people who use this site!
That said, I will be sure to pop in before the end of the week and check the state of play for myself ... I will not be holding my breath in expectation of any significant inmprovement though.

Loved it, plenty of Hoskins beers on, all that we tried were tasty and well-served, the HOB standing out as excellent. A proper pub, with good beer, and an incredibly friendly barmaid, could not fault the place. I had heard of the landlady's reputation, but was disappointed, I smiled and was friendly, and she responded in kind.
Thanks to all at the pub, had a great time before the football, and will definitely return subject to relegation/ promotion.Sadly, landlord as grumpy as ever, though to be fair I did enjoy the challenging beer range - a pub for the pub enthusiast !

A Bar called 'the pube' rather missing the point, disapointing. Rather sadly short changed and begrudgingly refunded my money, when challenged.By the way about the food - £4.50 for a sandwich with some crisps is a joke when other pubs like the Swan do fish & chips and pizza for £5.50.

15 cask ales and another 17 keg fonts. Who needs a beer festival? Miles better than the Vin IV in my opinion.

    Reviews by BITE users:

Lively, trendy pub in the heart of student territory. Pretty packed on a Thursday, which bodes well for them. Relatively expensive if an offer isn't on. Real ales are priced at £3, of which there was Castle Rock's Harvest and Elsie Mo, Oakham Oblivion and a handpulled cider. The Oblivion was on at £2.50. The two beers from Castle Rock were on good form. This is a pub that fills a gap in the market successfully, but it goes without saying that it won't be for everyone. Now reopened as The Font. Only been a couple of times so far so can't do a full review. The keg fonts are a little uninspiring apart from Vedett and Timmermans Kriek. An outlet for the ridiculously monikered Stella Black. Four real ales including Blue Monkey 99 Red Baboons, Castle Rock Harvest Pale and Elsie Mo. The baboons was just beginning to turn sour which doesn't bode well for a pub that's only been open little over a week. The food menu looks great. They do real chips - not frozen crap. 6/10.

Rumoured to be reopening soon. Wandered past and the old seating is being ripped out. Application by Castle Rock to serve booze stuck in window.
